The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal), also known as the Portuguese tax identification number, is a 9-digit number that identifies individuals and companies for tax purposes in Portugal. If you're planning to do anything official in Portugal — from buying property to opening a bank account — you'll need a NIF.
What is a NIF?
The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is Portugal's tax identification number. It's a unique 9-digit number assigned to every individual and legal entity that has tax obligations or conducts financial activities in Portugal.
For Portuguese citizens, the NIF is typically assigned at birth and appears on their Citizen Card (Cartão de Cidadão). For foreigners, the NIF must be specifically requested from the Portuguese Tax Authority (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira).
NIF Format
A Portuguese NIF is always 9 digits. For individuals, it typically starts with 1, 2, or 3. For foreigners without Portuguese residency, it often starts with 5.
Why Do You Need a NIF?
A NIF is required for virtually any official or financial activity in Portugal. Here are the most common situations where you'll need one:
Real Estate
- • Buying or selling property
- • Signing rental contracts
- • Paying property taxes (IMI)
- • Utility contracts
Banking & Finance
- • Opening bank accounts
- • Getting a Portuguese credit card
- • Investment accounts
- • Insurance policies
Business & Work
- • Employment contracts
- • Starting a business
- • Issuing invoices
- • Paying taxes
Daily Life
- • Mobile phone contracts
- • Internet subscriptions
- • Vehicle registration
- • Healthcare registration
Who Can Get a NIF?
Anyone can obtain a Portuguese NIF, regardless of nationality or residency status. This includes:
- EU/EEA citizens — can apply directly without a fiscal representative
- Non-EU citizens with Portuguese residency — can apply directly
- Non-EU citizens without Portuguese residency — need a fiscal representative
- Companies — both Portuguese and foreign companies
Fiscal Representative Requirement
If you're a non-EU citizen without Portuguese residency, you'll need to appoint a fiscal representative (representante fiscal) to obtain a NIF. This is a Portuguese resident (individual or company) who acts as your point of contact with the Portuguese Tax Authority.
Important Change (2022)
Since 2022, EU/EEA citizens no longer need a fiscal representative to obtain a NIF in Portugal, even if they don't reside in the country. Non-EU citizens still need one unless they have Portuguese residency.
The fiscal representative's responsibilities include:
- Receiving official correspondence from the Tax Authority
- Forwarding tax notifications to you
- Being the contact point for tax matters
Note that the fiscal representative is not responsible for paying your taxes — that obligation remains with you.
Required Documents
The documents required depend on your situation:
| Applicant Type | Required Documents |
|---|---|
| EU/EEA Citizens | • Valid passport or national ID card • Proof of address (home country or Portugal) |
| Non-EU with Residency | • Valid passport • Portuguese residence permit • Proof of Portuguese address |
| Non-EU without Residency | • Valid passport • Proof of address (home country) • Fiscal representative authorization • Representative's ID and NIF |
How to Apply for a NIF
There are several ways to obtain a Portuguese NIF:
Option 1: In Person at a Tax Office (Finanças)
You can apply at any local tax office (Serviço de Finanças) in Portugal. This is the fastest method — you'll typically receive your NIF immediately.
- Find your nearest Finanças office
- Take a number and wait to be called
- Present your documents
- Receive your NIF card on the spot
Option 2: Through a Representative
If you can't travel to Portugal, you can authorize someone to apply on your behalf. This requires a power of attorney (procuração) that specifically authorizes the representative to request a NIF.
Option 3: Through a Professional Service
Many law firms, accountants, and specialized services can obtain a NIF on your behalf. This is particularly useful if you need a fiscal representative and don't know anyone in Portugal.
