Foreign couples often begin by asking whether they can get married in Portugal. The better first question is usually this: which documents will the Portuguese civil registry accept for this specific couple?
A simple list is not enough. A birth certificate, proof of capacity to marry, a previous divorce document or a translated certificate can be correct in one situation and insufficient in another. The answer depends on the country of issue, the format of the document, apostille or legalization rules, language, marital status and the expectations of the registry handling the file.
