Choose the civil event first
The three most common civil-registry requests are straightforward once the underlying event is clear:
- birth certificate for a birth registered in Portugal
- marriage certificate for a marriage registered in Portugal
- death certificate for a death registered in Portugal
If the foreign checklist uses an unfamiliar document name, send it to us. We match the requirement to the Portuguese registry document before processing the request.
Birth Certificate from abroad
A Portuguese birth certificate can be required for nationality, family, inheritance, marriage, legal and administrative files.
The available request route depends on the record and certificate format.
If the record is older, incomplete or needs a more specific form, the practical path can differ from a standard recent request.
Marriage Certificate from abroad
A Portuguese marriage certificate can be obtained remotely when the marriage is already registered in Portugal.
If the marriage took place abroad and has never been entered in the Portuguese registry, certificate retrieval is not the first job. The marriage-registration route may need to come first.
Death Certificate from abroad
A Portuguese death certificate is often needed for inheritance, estates, banks, insurance, property and family administration.
We can obtain the available certificate in Portugal and keep the same case moving if the receiving process needs an additional document step.
Online access and paper are not the same delivery job
Portuguese civil certificates can be issued electronically or on paper.
An online certificate can be useful when the receiving party accepts digital access. A paper certificate may be needed when the document must be physically submitted, prepared for an international process or sent to another professional.
The access-code rules are also not identical for every civil certificate. We check the document and receiving requirement instead of assuming that one format fits every case.
If the certificate will be used outside Portugal
The destination changes the preparation route.
For a covered civil document presented to an authority in another EU Member State, apostille is not required for authenticity under Regulation (EU) 2016/1191. A multilingual standard form may also reduce the need for a separate translation.
For destinations outside that EU framework, apostille, certified translation, paper preparation or another formality may apply.
