Birth Certificate
A Portuguese birth certificate proves the facts recorded in a Portuguese birth registration.
It is commonly used for citizenship, family relationships, marriage, inheritance, identity or origin, court files and administrative procedures.

Marriage Certificate
A Portuguese marriage certificate proves the facts recorded in a Portuguese marriage registration.
It can include the spouses' identification details, the marriage modality, the matrimonial property regime and the place of marriage.
If the marriage is already recorded in Portugal, the certificate can be obtained remotely.
Death Certificate
A Portuguese death certificate identifies the deceased and records the date, time and place of death.
It is commonly requested for inheritance, estates, banking, property, family records, insurance and administrative procedures.
If the death is recorded in Portugal, we can obtain the certificate and prepare the file for its receiving institution.
Certificate retrieval and event registration are different jobs
A certificate is evidence of a civil event that is already in the Portuguese registry.
If a marriage took place abroad and has never been entered in Portugal, ordering a Portuguese marriage certificate does not create that registration. The foreign marriage may first need a transcrição de casamento.
The same distinction matters whenever the event itself still has to be entered in the Portuguese civil registry.
Living abroad does not mean you need to return to Portugal
Portugal provides online request routes for standard civil-registry certificates, but international files often involve more than simply ordering a code.
The receiving authority may ask for paper, a particular certificate format, apostille, a multilingual EU form, certified translation or international delivery.

Using a Portuguese civil certificate in another EU country
For covered public documents presented to an authority in another EU Member State, Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 removes the apostille requirement for authenticity.
Portugal has also notified birth, marriage and death certificates for optional multilingual standard forms that can help with translation.
The EU form does not replace the certificate. It is attached to it as a translation aid.
One civil certificate can lead into a complete international document file
Once the correct Portuguese certificate is identified, the next step depends on where it will be used.
A non-EU destination may require apostille or another preparation route. An EU authority may fall under the Regulation 2016/1191 no-apostille framework. Translation, paper delivery or another format can still matter in the receiving process.
