When a record search can help

  • You need a birth record for a parent or grandparent and only know some of the family details.
  • You are looking for a marriage record but do not know where it was registered or which name was used.
  • You need a death record for a relative, a family file or an inheritance matter and have incomplete identifying information.
  • You have an old copy, a spelling variation or an approximate date, but cannot identify the record to request.

Start with the details you know

You do not need every item below to start an enquiry. Tell us what is known, what is approximate and what has already been checked.

  • Full names and any alternative spellings or names used at different times.
  • An exact or approximate date of birth, marriage or death.
  • Places connected with the event, registration or family residence.
  • Parents' or spouses' names and any relevant family connection.
  • Old copies, registry references or access codes, if available.
  • Why you need the document and where it will be presented, if known.

How we approach your case

  1. Review the information available and clarify which record you are trying to identify.
  2. Define an individual search scope and proposal for your case.
  3. Compare the details and make the relevant enquiries with registry offices, registrars or archives.
  4. Explain what the enquiries establish and the available next step.

Older records may require an archive search rather than a current registry request. The appropriate source depends on the place, period and records available.

A relative abroad or an uncertain marriage record

If a Portuguese relative died abroad, we can consider a search for an existing Portuguese record using the details available. Searching for that record is separate from registering a foreign event in Portugal.

If you do not know whether a marriage was entered in the Portuguese register, begin with that question. A search that does not locate a record does not establish that the marriage never took place. Finding a family record does not by itself determine inheritance rights.

An individual quote, with no guaranteed result

This service is quoted individually according to the available information and the agreed search scope. There is no single price or standard completion time for every case.

A search may locate the record, identify a need for more information or finish without locating it. The outcome depends on the records available, access conditions and the information that can be established.

Obtaining a certificate, an apostille, a certified translation or delivery is considered separately when needed. The ordinary certificate service price is not the price of an archive search.

Already have enough details for a certificate request?

If the record can already be identified, use our Portuguese birth certificate service, Portuguese marriage certificate service or Portuguese death certificate service. We can confirm which route fits the information you have.
