Online certificate
The access code is valid for six months and has the same legal value as a paper certificate in Portugal.
Paper certificate
Use paper when the receiving authority specifically requires a physical certificate or when a later preparation step requires the paper route.
Recent certificate
A foreign authority may set its own freshness requirement even while an access code remains valid.
EU multilingual standard form
For eligible public documents within the EU, a multilingual standard form can help reduce translation requirements. It accompanies the public document and is not a standalone marriage certificate.
Common reasons for using a Portuguese marriage certificate abroad
Immigration, residence, citizenship or civil-status proof
The receiving authority may request proof of a marriage registered in Portugal. Confirm the exact document requirement before ordering.
Name change or civil-status update
A foreign registry, bank or other institution may ask for evidence of the registered marriage and may specify a recent or paper certificate.
Inheritance, pension, insurance, property or legal file
The professional or authority handling the matter decides what proof of marriage and format it requires.
Divorce or another family/legal procedure
A marriage certificate proves the registered marriage. A separate divorce certificate or court document may be required to prove the divorce itself.

Is apostille always required?
No. The receiving authority decides. For covered public documents presented between EU Member States under Regulation (EU) 2016/1191, apostille is not required.
Do I always need a translation?
No. It depends on the languages accepted by the receiving authority. A multilingual standard form may help for eligible EU use.
Is the six-month code the same as document validity abroad?
No. It is the online access period. A receiving authority may require a more recently issued certificate.
Does a marriage certificate prove divorce?
The marriage certificate proves the marriage registration and its recorded facts. If an authority needs proof of a divorce decision or divorce process, it may require a separate divorce certificate or other document.
