Which birth-certificate format may be needed?
Online certificate and access code
The online request gives access to the certificate through a code that is valid for six months. This is an access period, not a universal six-month acceptance rule for foreign authorities.
Paper certificate
Some authorities require a paper certificate even when an online version exists. Confirm this before ordering international delivery.
Recent or more detailed copy
Some procedures ask for a recently issued certificate or a more detailed/full copy. For example, some Portuguese nationality procedures refer to a full copy issued by photocopy. This is a procedure-specific requirement, not the default format for every use.
EU multilingual standard form
Within the EU, a multilingual standard form may be available for covered public documents. It is a translation aid attached to the public document, not a standalone birth certificate.

Nationality or ancestry
A birth certificate may be used to prove a family link or Portuguese origin. Check the exact nationality procedure before ordering because the required record and format can differ.
Inheritance and family records
A birth certificate may be used to establish identity or family relationships. The lawyer, notary, court or other authority handling the case decides what version and freshness it requires.
Marriage, consular and administrative procedures
A foreign civil registry, consulate or administrative authority may ask for a recent certificate, paper copy, apostille or translation. Obtain the requirement before choosing the preparation path.

Check the access-code validity and the receiving authority's format requirement. If apostille is required for an electronic public document with a digital signature or access code, the apostille must also be electronic.

Frequently asked questions
Is apostille always required for a Portuguese birth certificate used abroad?
No. The receiving authority decides. For covered public documents presented between EU Member States under Regulation (EU) 2016/1191, apostille is not required.
Is the six-month access-code period the same as document validity abroad?
No. Six months is the period during which the online certificate can be accessed using the code. A foreign authority may ask for a certificate issued more recently.
Is there one international birth certificate that works everywhere?
No. The receiving authority decides which format it accepts. An EU multilingual standard form is a translation aid attached to the public document and is not a standalone universal certificate.
Do I always need a certified translation?
